The St. Louis Rams made NFL history this past weekend when they selected University of Missouri, defensive end, Michael Sam with the 249th pick in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. He became the NFL’s first openly gay player. Sebastian Rey, President of the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans thinks it will make a big impact all across the country.

“It’s gonna have a big impact on young people being able to see you can achieve anything if you’re given an opportunity,” said Rey.

And with Sam’s history making moment coming just days before the LGBT community’s national effort called ‘GiveOUT Day’ happening on Wednesday, Rey says Sam has become almost instantly become a leader for the group, which isn’t completely fair.

“Whenever you become an LGBT public figure it’s put upon you to represent your whole community which you can’t do,” said Rey.
